Caravan & Motorhome Panel Repair Cost UK
Understand the likely cost of repairing textured aluminium, smooth aluminium, GRP, gelcoat and composite panels—and why two areas of damage that look almost identical can produce very different quotations.
A caravan or motorhome panel repair can cost a few hundred pounds, several thousand pounds or enough to make replacement and insurance decisions genuinely important. The visible mark is only the opening chapter. Material, access, stretching, water ingress, internal construction, graphics, dismantling and workshop time can all alter the final scope.
This guide provides cautious UK budgeting bands, explains what should be included in a quotation and helps you decide whether to request a mobile repair, workshop assessment, insurance estimate or replacement-panel comparison.

How Much Does Caravan or Motorhome Panel Repair Cost?
The broad planning bands below reflect the very different types of work commonly described as “panel repair”. They are not fixed Damage Fix prices, national averages or promises that your damage will fall within a particular band.
Use them to understand whether an enquiry is likely to involve a modest local repair, a specialist reconstruction or a larger insurance-style project. Quotations may be issued including or excluding VAT, so always check the total payable amount.
Minor Scuff, Scratch or Gelcoat Chip
£180–£450
May suit a limited preparation and refinishing process where the panel remains stable and there is no crack, puncture, water entry, major graphic or dismantling requirement.
Illustrative project band—not a quotation.
Small Dent, Crease or Puncture Repair
£350–£900
May include stabilising thin aluminium, filling, reproducing texture, priming, colour matching and local refinishing. Sharp creases, stretching and graphics raise the cost.
Textured and smooth panels differ considerably.
Localised GRP Crack or Hole Repair
£450–£1,200
A suitable repair may require reverse-side preparation, reinforcement, profile rebuilding and gelcoat or paint refinishing. Surface filler alone is not a structural GRP repair.
Access and crack extent are decisive.
Repair Near a Window, Rail, Door or Locker
£750–£2,000+
Costs may include component removal, fixing repairs, resealing, internal checks, replacement graphics and a larger paint area. Hidden damage can change the quotation.
Inspection may be required before a final price.
Major Local Repair or Several Connected Areas
£1,500–£4,500+
Large GRP repairs, multiple punctures, extensive creasing, internal wall damage, major dismantling or several connected components can move the work into a workshop project.
Recovery, storage and parts may be additional.
Full Panel, Side-Wall or Extensive Delamination Work
Individual estimate
Complete panel replacement, substantial damp reconstruction or widespread delamination frequently runs into several thousand pounds and can exceed the vehicle’s economic repair value.
Parts availability and vehicle value matter greatly.
Why Can Two Similar-Looking Panel Repairs Cost So Differently?
A photograph may show two dents of almost identical diameter. One could be in an open section of textured aluminium with stable material and no interior damage. The other could run into an awning rail, distort a window frame, tear the outer skin and create a route for water.
Both customers may reasonably describe the problem as “a dent about the size of my hand”. The repairer, however, is pricing two very different projects.
Panel Construction
Thin aluminium bonded to insulation behaves differently from a removable steel cab panel. GRP needs different materials and reinforcement again.
Damage Position
Open centre-panel damage may be simpler than damage beside windows, rails, seams, doors, lockers, lights or roof joints.
Damage Below the Surface
Crushed insulation, broken bonding, damp, framework damage and internal wall marks may not be visible from outside.
Finish to Reproduce
Embossed aluminium, faded white paint, gelcoat, graphics and metallic cab colours all create different finishing demands.
Dismantling and Access
Removing a window, rail, locker, light, trim or interior furniture can add substantial labour before the panel repair begins.
Working Environment
A modest mobile repair on a suitable driveway is a different proposition from several days of workshop work, extraction and secure storage.
The most useful question is therefore not, “What is the cost per square inch?” It is, “What complete repair process is required to restore this particular construction safely and acceptably?” Caravan panels have never shown much respect for simple multiplication.
How Panel Material Affects Repair Cost
Textured Aluminium
Textured aluminium repairs may involve stabilising stretched metal, filling the remaining depression or puncture, recreating the embossed pattern, priming and refinishing. The texture must look convincing from more than one angle.
Cost generally rises when the damage is sharply creased, crosses a decal, has flattened a large area of texture or sits close to a joint. A shallow mark in an open panel may be considerably simpler.
Smooth Aluminium
Smooth panels remove the texture-reproduction stage, but they reveal ripples, filler shape, sanding marks and colour variation extremely clearly. Thin aluminium may stretch and may be bonded directly to the wall construction.
A long crease or wavy side panel can require a much larger working area than the deepest point suggests. Smoothness is not the same as simplicity.
GRP, Fibreglass and Gelcoat
A superficial gelcoat chip can be relatively contained. A crack caused by flexing or impact may extend through the reinforcement and require access, removal of weak material, new laminate, profile rebuilding and finishing.
Painted GRP and gelcoat-finished GRP require different finishing processes. Large motorhome panels may also need controlled workshop access and a bigger paint area.
Composite and Sandwich Panels
A sandwich wall may combine an outer skin, insulation, adhesive, framework and interior wallboard. An impact can affect several layers while leaving a surprisingly modest exterior mark.
If bonding has failed or insulation has been crushed, a surface-only repair may not be enough. Internal access and reconstruction can turn a cosmetic-looking job into a larger panel project.
Plastic Mouldings and Panel Sections
ABS, thermoplastic and other moulded components may crack, split, distort or lose mounting tabs. Material identification matters because plastic welding, controlled reshaping, bonding and reinforcement systems are not interchangeable.
Missing fragments, obsolete parts and integrated lights can all alter whether repair is more economical than replacement.
Motorhome Cab Panels
The steel or aluminium cab section may use conventional automotive repair methods, including PDR or paint refinishing where appropriate. The habitation body may require an entirely different specialist.
Where damage crosses the cab-to-body joint, both vehicle-body and leisure-vehicle construction may need consideration.
How Different Types of Panel Damage Change the Price
Scratches and Abrasions
A light surface mark may polish or improve without painting. A deep scratch can expose aluminium, GRP or primer and require filling, sealing, paint or gelcoat work. Damage across a graphic adds another stage.
Dents and Creases
Depth, sharpness, stretch, texture and access matter more than diameter alone. A broad shallow dent can offer more options than a much smaller sharp crease.
Holes and Punctures
The repairer may need to stabilise torn material, rebuild the panel and check the reverse side. Cost increases near wiring, pipework, windows, rails and structural joints.
GRP Cracks and Depressions
Crack length is only part of the story. Flexing, missing reinforcement, reverse-side access and the cause of the fracture influence the repair method.
Delamination and Soft Areas
Local bonding work may be possible in some cases. Widespread separation, damp or damaged internal structure can require major dismantling and reconstruction.
Accident Damage Across Several Parts
A reversing impact may involve the panel, rail, corner, locker, light, internal wall and chassis attachment. Each affected item should appear in the estimate rather than being hidden inside one vague line.
The Main Factors That Affect Panel Repair Cost
| Cost factor | Why it changes the repair | What to show or ask |
|---|---|---|
| Panel material | Aluminium, GRP, plastic and composite walls require different shaping, reinforcement and finishing systems. | Provide the make, model, year and clear close photographs. |
| Damage size and depth | A deep crease or stretched area can require a wider repair than the visible centre. | Include wide, medium, close and angled photographs. |
| Position | Damage near openings, rails, seams and joints may affect frames, fixings and sealing. | Show the complete surrounding area, not only the mark. |
| Interior condition | Crushed insulation, broken wallboard, damp or failed bonding can add substantial work. | Photograph the interior opposite the damage where accessible. |
| Dismantling | Windows, lockers, rails, lights, trims or furniture may need removal and careful refitting. | Ask whether dismantling and replacement fixings are included. |
| Sealing | Opened seams and removed fittings need suitable cleaning, preparation and resealing. | Confirm the joint and water-resistance work in writing. |
| Paint, gelcoat and texture | Colour fade, finish area, embossed pattern and gloss level influence materials and labour. | Ask how the finish will be matched and what result is realistic. |
| Graphics and decals | Stripes may need removal, reproduction, extension or replacement after refinishing. | Confirm whether graphic work is included and whether parts are available. |
| Mobile travel | Distance, site suitability and repeated visits can affect the total mobile charge. | Provide the full repair postcode and parking-area photographs. |
| Workshop time | Secure storage, extraction, access equipment, dismantling and curing add facility costs. | Ask how long the vehicle will remain and whether storage is included. |
| Previous repairs | Old filler, poor bonding, mismatched paint and concealed cracking can expand the scope. | Tell the repairer about known previous work or recurring cracks. |
| VAT and commercial terms | Some quotations are shown plus VAT and may exclude parts, collection, storage or estimate fees. | Compare the complete payable total and stated exclusions. |
Is Mobile Panel Repair Cheaper Than Workshop Repair?
Mobile work can avoid transport and may suit a contained repair at the owner’s home, storage facility, dealership or another authorised location. It is not automatically the cheapest route once weather, repeated visits, shelter, travel and limited dismantling access are considered.
Mobile Repair May Control Cost When
- The damage is genuinely localised.
- The panel remains stable and weatherproof.
- Limited dismantling is required.
- Safe, level and spacious access is available.
- Weather, temperature and lighting suit the process.
- Painting or sanding is permitted at the location.
- The job can be completed without leaving the vehicle open overnight.
Workshop Cost May Be Justified When
- Windows, rails, lockers or interior items need removal.
- GRP requires substantial reverse-side reinforcement.
- A large paint or gelcoat area is involved.
- Water ingress or delamination requires investigation.
- The repair will remain dismantled for several days.
- Controlled extraction, heat or curing is necessary.
- The motorhome requires large-vehicle access equipment.
Is It Cheaper to Repair or Replace a Caravan or Motorhome Panel?
A complete replacement panel may seem like the cleanest solution, but it can require extensive dismantling, new sealing systems, internal furniture removal, windows, graphics, transport and many hours of labour. For older vehicles, the correct panel or texture may no longer be available.
Repair can avoid much of that work when the damage is localised and the remaining construction is sound. Replacement may still be the more reliable choice where the damage is extensive, unstable or affects a readily available removable component.
| Consideration | Local or sectional repair | Panel replacement |
|---|---|---|
| Best suited to | Contained damage where the panel and surrounding structure can be stabilised. | Extensive damage, widespread failure or components that can be replaced reliably. |
| Dismantling | May be limited, although nearby fittings sometimes need removal. | Can involve windows, rails, furniture, seals, lights and connected panels. |
| Parts availability | Can preserve an original panel when replacement is obsolete. | Depends on manufacturer supply, model year, texture, colour and delivery time. |
| Finish | Requires skilled texture, profile, gelcoat, paint and graphic matching. | New parts may still need paint, graphics, fitting and blending with aged surroundings. |
| Cost | Often lower for appropriate localised damage. | Frequently several thousand pounds once parts and labour are included. |
| Risk | Poor method or unrealistic expectations can leave visible or unstable results. | Major dismantling can introduce alignment, sealing and availability risks. |
When Damage Is Localised
The surrounding panel is stable, water has not spread, a good finish is achievable and replacement would cause disproportionate dismantling.
When the Decision Is Close
A specialist may quote repair and replacement alternatives, then compare longevity, appearance, parts lead time, vehicle value and insurance position.
When Failure Is Extensive
Widespread delamination, major structural distortion, multiple opened joints or a panel that cannot be stabilised may make replacement or larger reconstruction preferable.
Example Panel Repair Cost Scenarios
These examples show why a description such as “small dent” is not enough to price a repair. They are illustrative only and do not represent promises, fixed charges or quotations for unseen vehicles.
Textured Caravan Panel: Awning-Pole Dent
Possible budget: approximately £350–£850.
A localised dent away from the rail may need stabilising, filling, texture reproduction and paint. A deep centre, torn skin or damaged decal can increase the cost.
Smooth Caravan Side: Gatepost Crease
Possible budget: approximately £500–£1,500+.
A long crease can stretch thin aluminium and require a larger repair and paint area. Damage near a locker or seam may add dismantling and resealing.
Motorhome GRP Rear Panel Crack
Possible budget: approximately £600–£1,800+.
Reverse-side access, reinforcement, profile work and a larger painted area can make this more involved than the crack length alone suggests.
Small Puncture Beside an Awning Rail
Possible budget: approximately £750–£2,000+.
The rail, fixings, sealant and internal wall may need checking or removal. The same puncture in an open panel could cost significantly less.
Panel Damage With Internal Wall Marking
Possible budget: approximately £1,000–£3,500+.
The repair may involve the external skin, insulation, bonding and interior wallboard. Damp or framework damage can push the scope higher.
Complete Side or Major Panel Replacement
Possible budget: individual estimate, commonly several thousand pounds.
Parts, freight, window and furniture removal, bonding, sealing, graphics, paint, storage and labour all influence the final project.
Should You Claim on Insurance for Panel Damage?
Insurance may be worth considering where damage is substantial, several panels or fittings are involved, water ingress is possible, recovery is required or the repair cost is likely to be well above the policy excess.
A privately funded repair may be considered where the damage is modest and the complete cost is close to the excess. That decision should be made only after checking the policy, notification requirements and potential implications. Damage Fix cannot determine whether an individual claim will be accepted.
Before Authorising Claim Repairs
- Notify the insurer according to the policy requirements.
- Obtain the claim reference.
- Ask whether an inspection or specific estimate format is required.
- Confirm whether you may nominate a specialist repairer.
- Do not dispose of damaged parts or evidence too early.
- Obtain approval before permanent repair where required.
A Strong Panel Repair Estimate Should Identify
- Vehicle and damage details.
- Labour operations and hours or values.
- Materials, parts, seals, fixings and graphics.
- Dismantling and refitting.
- Paint, gelcoat or texture work.
- VAT and stated exclusions.
- Inspection-dependent or supplementary work.

What Photographs Are Needed for a Panel Repair Price?
A close-up confirms that damage exists. It does not show which vehicle side is affected, how the panel is constructed, whether a window is nearby or whether the caravan is parked six inches from a wall.
Damage Photographs
- The complete caravan or motorhome.
- The entire damaged side, front or rear.
- A medium view of the complete panel.
- A sharp close-up of the deepest damage.
- Angled views showing dent depth and reflections.
- A ruler or familiar object for scale.
- Windows, rails, seams, lockers, lights and graphics nearby.
- The interior wall opposite the impact.
Vehicle and Location Information
- Manufacturer, model and approximate year.
- Overall motorhome length, width and travelling height.
- Repair postcode and storage location.
- How the damage happened.

How Vehicle Age and Value Affect the Decision
A technically possible repair is not always economically sensible. The owner, repairer and insurer may need to compare the total repair cost with the vehicle’s pre-damage value, replacement availability, condition and intended future use.
Newer or High-Value Vehicle
Original finish expectations, manufacturer parts, graphics and resale value may justify a more extensive repair or replacement route.
Older but Well-Kept Vehicle
Specialist repair can be particularly valuable where replacement panels are obsolete and the rest of the vehicle remains sound.
Vehicle With Existing Damp or Major Defects
Adding expensive cosmetic work to widespread structural deterioration may not represent good value without a complete condition assessment.
An insurer may consider repair cost, salvage, market value and policy terms when deciding whether a vehicle is economical to repair. A total-loss or cash-settlement decision is different from saying that no technical repair is possible.

Caravan and Motorhome Panel Repair Cost FAQs
How much does a small caravan panel repair cost?
A minor surface repair may fall around £180–£450, while a localised textured aluminium dent, crease or puncture may be approximately £350–£900. These are broad planning bands only. Material, position, texture, graphics and hidden damage can change the price.
How much does a motorhome GRP panel repair cost?
A contained GRP crack or hole repair may broadly fall around £450–£1,200. Larger rear-panel, side-wall or structural laminate repairs can cost considerably more, especially where reverse-side access, large refinishing areas or component removal are required.
Is caravan panel repair cheaper than replacement?
Often, where damage is localised and the surrounding panel remains sound. Complete replacement can involve parts, freight, windows, furniture, rails, seals, graphics and extensive labour. Replacement may still be more reliable where damage or delamination is widespread.
Can a textured caravan panel dent be repaired?
Many can be improved or repaired using specialist shaping, filling, texture reproduction and refinishing. The likely finish and cost depend on the texture pattern, dent depth, aluminium stretch, damage position and graphics.
Why is a small puncture sometimes expensive?
A puncture beside an awning rail, window, seam or locker can damage fixings, seals, insulation and interior wallboard. The hole may be small while the complete repair process is not.
Can photographs provide a final fixed price?
Sometimes a repairer can quote confidently from strong images, but photographs cannot always reveal damp, crushed insulation, previous filler, broken bonding or internal cracking. The price may remain provisional until inspection or dismantling.
Does the quoted price normally include VAT?
Not always. Some repairers quote a total including VAT, while commercial estimates may show net value and VAT separately. Confirm the complete amount payable before accepting the quotation.
Are decals and graphics included in panel repair prices?
Only where the quotation says so. A stripe crossing the repair may need removal, reproduction or replacement. Older graphics can be discontinued or faded, making an exact match more difficult.
Will mobile repair always cost less than workshop repair?
No. Mobile repair can provide excellent value for a suitable localised job, but travel, weather, site conditions and repeated visits can add cost. Larger dismantling, GRP or paint work may be more efficient and reliable in a workshop.
What happens if hidden damage is found?
The repairer should document what has been discovered and obtain approval for necessary additional work. Insurance claims may require a supplementary estimate and insurer or assessor authorisation before work continues.
Can water ingress make a panel repair much more expensive?
Yes. Moisture can affect insulation, bonding, timber or composite framing, interior wallboard, flooring and furniture beyond the visible opening. The leak source and damaged materials need addressing rather than covering the outside mark.
How much does full caravan side-panel replacement cost?
It requires an individual estimate and commonly runs into several thousand pounds once parts, freight, dismantling, windows, furniture, bonding, sealing, paint, graphics and labour are included. Availability varies greatly by make, model and age.
Can an old or discontinued caravan panel still be repaired?
Often, specialist local repair or reconstruction becomes especially valuable when a replacement texture, moulding or complete panel is no longer available. The repairer should still explain the achievable appearance and durability.
Should I claim on insurance or pay privately?
Compare the complete repair estimate with the policy excess and read the policy’s notification requirements. Substantial, multi-panel or water-ingress damage may justify a claim. Damage Fix cannot advise whether an individual claim will be accepted.
Do insurers need to approve panel repairs first?
Many policies and claims processes require notification, evidence, an estimate, inspection or authorisation before permanent work begins. Follow the insurer’s instructions and retain the claim reference and original photographs.
How can I obtain a more accurate initial quotation?
Provide the manufacturer, model, year, repair postcode, cause of damage and wide, medium, close, angled, scale, interior and working-location photographs. Mention damp, movement, previous repairs and any deadline.
Is a cosmetic surface repair enough for cracked GRP?
Not where the reinforcement beneath the surface has fractured. Weak material may need removing and rebuilding before gelcoat or paint is restored. Filler alone does not recreate damaged fibreglass structure.
Am I committed to accepting a RepairHub quotation?
No. Review the repair method, total price, VAT, location, timing, dismantling, graphics, exclusions, inspection conditions and guarantee before deciding whether to proceed.
